The 1st Lebanese Astrophysics Meeting '09:

From Stars to Galaxies

April 14 - 17, 2009

Beirut, Lebanon

Scientific Rationale:

The evolutionary cycles of stars and galaxies depend on each other in ways obvious and subtle, and much of that dependence is mediated by the Interstellar Medium. Galaxies provide the gravitational potential well in which interstellar gas accumulates and eventually forms stars that die and enrich with new elements the medium from which they formed. Black holes at the centers of galaxies may affect the host galaxy and drive some of the enriched gas into inter-galactic space. The aim of this meeting is to explore the symbiotic relationship between stars and galaxies, and the role of the ISM. It will bring together a group of astrophysicists with a broad range of interests ranging from stellar evolution, to the ISM, to galaxies and their nuclei. This meeting will also serve as a venue to strengthen the ties between astrophysicists working in Lebanon and those of Lebanese origin working abroad, and also strengthen the ties between astrophysicists working in various countries in the region.

Program:

The meeting will be divided into 3 topical sessions. Each topical session will have one or more 75-minutes long (including 10 minutes of Q&A) invited review talks, and a number of contributed talks. A contributed talk will last for 45 minutes (including 10 minutes of Q&A). The invited review talks provide the background for the specific topic and discuss trends in current research. Contributed talks will present original research results, but will also provide enough details so that people not in the specific sub-field will be able to appreciate the work.

 Topical Sessions:

1- Stellar Evolution, Stellar Populations

2- ISM

3- Galaxies: Stellar Populations, Morphology, Galaxy Nuclei (star clusters, AGN)
