ايام العلوم - Science Days

 

The National Committee of the IYA 09 is participating in the 2nd Science Days organized by the Municipality of Beirut, The Ministry of Culture with the collaboration of the Municipality of Geneva, on October 14-17 in the Beirut Hippodrome. We will be present with a large stand (6x12 m) featuring a large number of activities and workshops. An observing platform to look at the Sun, Jupiter, and other objects of the night sky will be a part of our stand.

 

Schedule

Octobre 14-17: 3:00 pm to 10:00 pm

Help is needed for the stand. We need volunteers to help manage the various proposed activities.

Volunteers

If you would like to volunteer, you do not need to be present all 4 days, and from 3:00 pm to 10:00 pm. If you can secure 4 hours over one or two days, please send an email to Roger Hajjar or Bassem Sabra, email through the contacts page on the website. 

Please tell us what is the activity you would like to volunteer for and you availability. No special skills are needed

Volunteers will wear an IYA T-shirt on which a nice astronomy picture is printed.

Worshops and Activities

Within the stand, a number of hands on workshops will be organised. These are:

  • Mounting a cardboard Planisphere: Organized by Ecole Val Pere Jacques on Friday and Saturday. Needs volunteers for other days
  • Mounting a CD based spectroscope,
  • An Astronomy Puzzle game for kids
  • Mounting a Sundial
  • Mounting a solar motion demonstrator
  • A Water Rocket workshop and launching facility

A FETTU exhibition will be featured during the Science Days. Photos have been graciously given for the duration of the event by the Geneva Observatory. Members of the National Committee provided the translation of caption to arabic. We are also preparing a questionnaire to accompany the exhibition. We will have some gifts for those who win.Needs volunteers to secure a continuous presence around the exhibition.
